About the club

Who we are

The club

Water Polo is one of Oxford's Full Blue sports, making it highly prestigious. The club exists for everyone: from complete beginners who've never held a water polo ball, to Blues players representing the University against other unis around the country. Training runs up to four-five times a week across the season, alongside an exciting calendar of socials.

The season

Yearly schedule

Michaelmas

Preseason & BUCS begins

Each term starts with a preseason block, before the club moves into BUCS Championship competition.

Hilary

BUCS & Varsity

BUCS Championship fixtures continue through Hilary term, culminating in the Varsity match against Cambridge — the longest-running annual water polo rivalry in the world, first played in 1891.

Trinity

Cuppers

Teams are formed around Oxford colleges and compete for the club's prestigious rubber duck trophy — a fun, low-pressure way to end the year.

Off the pitch

Socials

Alongside training and matches, the club runs a regular calendar of socials — both amongst ourselves and with other clubs. Think park runs, picnics, and more.

Placeholder — add details of upcoming and regular socials here (park runs, picnics, joint socials with other clubs, etc.).

Costs

Membership

Annual club membership is £140. This is almost always covered by the Oxford college you're a member of — check with your college's sports fund or JCR/MCR for details.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to play water polo to join?
Not at all. Most of our novice squad arrives with zero water polo experience. You'll need to be a confident swimmer comfortable in deep water — the rest is taught at training.
How many times a week is training?
It depends on your squad. Novice and social sessions run once or twice a week; the Blues squads train up to five or six times a week in-season.
Is there a trial session before I commit?
Yes — freshers' fortnight sessions at the start of Michaelmas term are open to anyone curious, no commitment or membership needed. See the Join page for dates.
Do you compete outside Oxford?
Yes. Our squads compete in BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) leagues against other UK universities throughout the year, culminating in the Varsity match against Cambridge.
